FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fast Track Science (FTS)? Fast Track Science is a kit-based educational program based on modifying and racing remote-controlled cars. The program is available in two formats: 1) an after-school program (33+ one-hour blocks of instruction), and 2) a week-long camp (30 hour block of instruction) Why racing? Racing provides an ideal example of how the scientific method is applied to real-world problems. Developing a racecar is a science experiment: it requires background, developing ideas about what might or might not work, experimentation, and refining of those ideas. It requires learning how to optimize variables in situations that demand compromises. It offers students an opportunity to experience the drive and determination that scientists everywhere bring to their work, helping them understand that a scientist pursues understanding the aspects of his field with the same dogged enthusiasm that drives top NASCAR teams.
What support can I expect from the
Can I run an after-school program and a camp program? Yes, but keep in mind that they are basically the same program, except for format. So you would want to make sure you have different students enrolled in the two programs.
What is the student target audience for the FT S program? The target audience is divided into 2 groups, 4th-5th grades and 6th-8th grades.
How much do the FTS kits cost? The kits cost $1948 for up to 24 students, working in teams of 4.
What is provided in the FTS kits? One kit is the ramp and the other kit contains 6 remote-controlled cars with controllers, 6 digital scales, 6 calculators, 6 stop watches, AA batteries, 9-volt batteries, index cards, metal washers, 2” roll masking tape, six 1” rolls masking tape, graph paper, and a resource CD containing all of the written materials, plus videos and adjunct activities, and a Mark Martin DVD which emphasizes the importance of math and science. You will be provided hard copies of the following: a teacher guide, slide shows, a student logbook (feel free to make as many copies as you need), 24 pre-assessments, 24 post-assessments, 24 student surveys, and 2 teacher surveys. We ask that you please return all of the assessments and surveys at the completion of each session with the # of students that participated in the program. This information is imperative for the continuance of this program. Please send to the National Science Center, Attn: Rhonda Carroll, One 7th Street, Augusta, GA 30901.
What size classroom do I need? An ideal size would be approximately 30’x 40’; however a smaller room will work. We usually set up the track at one end of the classroom and set up the desks or tables for student instruction at the other end of the classroom.
Is training available on how to use the program? Yes, a Power Point presentation will be available on our website, so you can access the training whenever and from wherever you like. www.nationalsciencecenter.org
