What is Fast Track Science? (FTS)
-
Fast Track Science is a week-long summer camp program based on modifying and racing remote-controlled cars. Why racing? Racing provides an ideal example of how the scientific method is applied to real-world problems. Developing a racecar is a science experiment: it requires background, developing ideas about what might or might not work, experimentation, and refining of those ideas. It requires learning how to optimize variables in situations that demand compromises. It offers students an opportunity to experience the drive and determination that scientists everywhere bring to their work, helping them understand that a scientist pursues understanding the aspects of his field with the same dogged enthusiasm that drives top NASCAR teams.

What support can I expect from the National Science Center (NSC)?
-
The NSC provides guidance, curriculum, classroom materials, teacher training, marketing materials, and teacher compensation.

How will I be compensated for teaching a camp?

A certified teacher can earn either $1000 or $750 per week. If a certified teacher teams up with another certified teacher, each teacher will be paid $750 each week. -
-
What is the student target audience for the FTS camps?
-
The target audience is divided into 2 groups, 4th-5th grades and 6th-8th grades.

-
The camp costs $199 a week per student which will be paid directly to the NSC.
-
-
Are sponsorships available for students to attend the FTS camp?
-
No scholarships are available from the NSC; however, we would encourage you to seek support from your local community for this purpose. Previously, sites for other camps have received sponsorship from local car dealerships, auto parts stores, banks, etc. Also, check to see if your local school system has funding available for summer programs.
-
-
How do students sign up for camp?
-
Parents will register students online during a specified registration period by going to the NSC website, www.NationalScienceCenter.org.
-
-
Do I have to run camps at both the elementary and middle grade levels to qualify to teach the camps?
-
No, you can run camps at either or both levels. It is entirely based on your student population and what you can accommodate.
-
-
What size classroom do I need?
-
An ideal size would be approximately 30’ x 40’, however a smaller room will work. We usually set up the track at one end of the classroom and set up the desks or tables for student instruction at the other end of the classroom.
-
-
Does it matter where I live to host a camp?
-
No, but the NSC would like to have teachers who are familiar with the local community. We could really use your help in getting the word out to parents through school, church, community clubs and organizations, etc.
-
-
How and when will I be trained to teach this program?
-
The NSC and Ten80 plan to train via video teleconferencing. The NSC will coordinate training dates and times once the participant sites are identified.
-
-
How do I become a part of this great opportunity?
