Volunteer Opportunities
The goals of the Volunteer Program at the National Science Center's Fort Discovery are to support the programs and activities of
the facility through assisting staff with various tasks, to enhance the quality of the service given to Fort Discovery visitors, and to foster
the relationship between the Science Center and the Augusta community.
We also offer a summer program for High School Students. Call for information or click HERE for student volunteer application and parental release.
General Requirements for All PositionsVolunteers must be at least 14 years of age, work one 4-hour shift per month for at least 3 months, attend orientation and training, become knowledgeable of the volunteer handbook, and wear a Fort Discovery-provided I.D. badge.
Volunteer Positions- Bus Greeter - Our most popular volunteer position! Meet and greet visiting school buses during the morning and afternoon. (School year only.)
- Camp-In Aide - Overnight Camp-In program: help with check-in, meals, workshops, and the preparation of workshop activities. Volunteers may earn up to double service hour credits per event.
- Clerical Assistant - Clerical support to various departments.
- Exhibit Technician/Developer - Assist exhibit developers in repairing exhibit components and/or developing parts for new interactive exhibits.
- Greeter - Answer general center inquiries and interact with visitors.
- Explainer - Interact with the public and assist in the explanation of interactive exhibits and/or run public programs.
- IT Assistant - Provide support to the Information Technology Staff.
- Kidscape Assistant - Monitor and participate in Kids Room activities geared to age 7 and younger children.
- Planetarium Assistant - Assist planetarium operators in running public programs in our STARLAB Planetarium.
- Science Demonstrator - Give informal (on exhibit floors) and formal (in the Power Station) demonstrations to visitors.
- Science Store Clerk - Sell science-related merchandise.
- Science To Go Assistant - Assist by going into the community and presenting science programs for local schools and organizations.
- Maintenance - Keeping our building and/or grounds beautiful.
- Summer Camps - Assist in our popular camps during the summer.
- Special Events - Events that may occur off property or after hours. May also be an educational activity held at the Center.
- Teacher Resource Center - Help teachers check in and out materials and general administration duties.
- Self-satisfaction that comes from helping others.
- Free covered parking while volunteering.
- 15% discount in The Science Store.
- Explore the Science Center as much as you want.
- Special events for volunteers only.
- After 100 hours of service, volunteers receive a free Family or Individual membership.
- A personal reference of your volunteer service with us.
